Education and Livelihood

Once literacy skills have been mastered in our classes, we then run sewing classes, jewellery, and handicraft making, where parents and out of school teenagers learn how to make products from recycled materials. In 2008 45% of trainees who dropped out of the livelihood courses explained that they were unable to complete the training because they needed to earn money for food on the course days, teenagers were unable to attend as they were looking after their brothers and sisters. A food for training program was introduced in 2009 offering trainees a daily food parcel and a daycare center was opened to look after younger children and siblings on course days which has resulted in 97% of students now attending their training days.

Electronics Courses are also held regularly. Men and women are taught by a certified electrical engineer to repair fridges and televisions, mobile telephones, fans, computers, as well as how to read electronic circuit diagrams. Many graduates have been able to suppliment their income with this new skill.
